Abstract |

The rise of women journalists in India has significantly reshaped the landscape of the media industry in recent decades. Once perceived as a male-dominated domain, Indian journalism has experienced a notable influx of women across various platforms, marking a significant shift in workforce dynamics and editorial leadership. Despite facing historical gender biases and societal challenges, women journalists have emerged as prominent voices in reporting natural disasters, conflicts, and sports events, challenging traditional gender roles and stereotypes within the profession. This paper delves into the multifaceted phenomenon of women's dominance in Indian journalism, analysing historical contexts, workforce dynamics, professional challenges, and the impact on news representation and content. Drawing from a comprehensive review of related literature, including works by scholars such as Ammu Joseph, Sevanti Ninan, and Neha Dixit, the study contextualizes the evolution of women's roles and contributions in Indian journalism over time. The Key findings reveal a steady increase in the number of women working across print, radio, television, and digital media platforms, with notable advancements in leadership positions and editorial roles. However, despite these advancements, women journalists in India continue to face significant challenges, including gender discrimination, unequal pay, limited access to decision-making roles, workplace harassment, and difficulties balancing work and family responsibilities. The study underscores the need for concerted efforts to address systemic inequalities and promote gender equality within the media industry. By critically examining the structural constraints and cultural norms that hinder women's growth and success in journalism, the research aims to contribute to on-going discussions on gender equality, media diversity, and societal change. Ultimately, the paper advocates for inclusive policies, supportive workplace environments, and gender-sensitive practices to empower women journalists and ensure their meaningful participation in shaping public discourse and democratic governance. |
