Abstract

High-rise building design and construction require innovative structural systems to guarantee stability and withstand lateral stresses, especially in areas vulnerable to strong winds or seismic activity. With their ability to improve stiffness and decrease lateral displacements, outrigger systems have become an essential structural component in the design of tall buildings. The many outrigger systems used in high-rise buildings are reviewed in-depth and compared in this research. The study looks at several outrigger configurations, such as super column, belt truss, and perimeter outriggers, along with their variants and combinations. A variety of outrigger systems are compared in terms of structural performance parameters, including interstory drift, lateral displacement reduction, and overall building stiffness. Furthermore, the selection of outrigger configurations is influenced by various aspects such as building shape, height, location, and seismicity. The benefits and drawbacks of each outrigger system are clarified through a comparative analysis of case studies and mathematical models. Aspects like material utilization, architectural consequences, and building complexity are also discussed. To maximize system performance, the impact of outrigger geometry and placement on structural behaviour is also studied. The evaluation highlights how crucial it is to choose an outrigger system that is suitable for the project and site conditions. The study's conclusions can help developers, architects, and structural engineers develop and place outrigger systems for high-rise structures more effectively, which would enhance urban environments' overall safety, occupant comfort, and structural performance.
