Abstract |
|
Phytotherapy has been used traditionally to cure human ailments and Centella asiatica (CA) has quite impressive ethnomedicinal uses in Asian countries including the treatment of skin diseases, insomnia, stomach worms, dysentery and syphilis. CA extract is also a good cardiotonic due to presence of asiaticosides and asiaticacid in it as they increase the B- cell lymphoma 2/Bcl2 Associated X-protein (Bcl2/Bax) ratio and prevent the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes in vitro and in vivo. In this review, the therapeutic benefits of CA have been highlighted with special reference to the prevention and cure of cardiovascular diseases like cardiac hypertrophy, myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury (MIRI) in the patients of coronary heart disease (CHD). |
