Abstract

Face recognition is considered one of the most important biometrics. It has a number of advantages over other human identification methods. Firstly, it is non-intrusive. While many biometrics require the subject's co-operation and awareness in order to perform an identification or verification such as looking into an eye scanner or placing hand on a fingerprint reader, face recognition could be performed even without the subject's knowledge. Robustness of a face recognition system is measured by the ability to identify human subjects even in the presence of many variations in appearance of their faces. While most research efforts have concentrated on recognizing a human face from two dimensional (2D) images, recently three - dimensional (3D) approaches have been receiving more attention. Our objective in this research is to develop a face recognition system that overcomes the problem of changes in gesture and mimics in 3D range images.
