Abstract |
|
Discusses the environmental issue of hazardous waste disposal and highlights silica fume (SF) as a useful industrial by-product. Instead of being discarded, SF can be reused in concrete to produce high-strength concrete (HSC) and ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The paper reviews the properties of SF in concrete, showing that it improves mechanical strength (compressive, tensile, and flexural), durability, and micro-structure due to its pozzolanic reaction. However, it may also reduce workability and increase shrinkage in some cases. The study emphasizes the importance of analyzing SF’s effect on cement hydration and concrete behavior from a micro-structural perspective. |
